With President Stephen L. Salyer’s announced plans to step down in the summer of 2022, Salzburg Global Seminar is seeking a new chief executive to take the helm in its 75th anniversary year.

The next President and CEO will be the international non-profit organization’s ninth since its formal incorporation in 1950, following in the illustrious footsteps of not only former media executive Salyer (2005-2022), but also former UN Under-Secretary General and US Congressman Bradford Morse (1986-1991); former university administrators, Olin Robison (1991-2004), Thomas H. Eliot (1973-76), Arthur S. Adams (1962-65), and Dexter Perkins (1950-1962); diplomat John “Jack” W. Tuthill (1977-85); and lawyer, Harvard Dean and senior civil servant Paul M. Herzog (1965-71).

All Salzburg Global Presidents thus far have been American, and while the organization is incorporated in both the US and Austria, citizenship of neither country is required. As an international organization with a public commitment to improving diversity, equity and inclusion through its programs and within its staff, Salzburg Global Seminar strongly encourages candidates from diverse backgrounds (including communities of color, the LGBT* community and people with disabilities) to apply for this role to lead our organization as we continue in our mission to challenge current and future leaders to shape a better world.

Much like their predecessors, the new President and CEO will have the mandate to shape the focus and priorities of the organization – successive presidents have expanded the geographic and thematic scope of Salzburg Global as it responded to the changing global needs and local conditions – and to create an impact on a global scale through Salzburg Global’s international, intergenerational, and interdisciplinary network of more than 20,000 active alumni, known as Salzburg Global Fellows.

Salzburg Global is seeking an innovative, energetic leader who will harness intellectual excellence, creativity, and passion to deepen its global impact and expand the prominence of the ideas and leaders it develops.

In addition to proven fundraising and organizational experience, the new President and CEO will have superior communication and interpersonal skills; an ability to inspire staff and donors; a willingness and the requisite skills to build long-term relationships with Salzburg Global Seminar supporters, friends, and donors; and will recruit, lead, and inspire a dedicated, diverse, and highly accomplished staff.
